Background of the Study:
Street begging is a visible manifestation of urban poverty, particularly in Ilorin South, where economic disparities and limited employment opportunities drive vulnerable populations into public spaces in search of survival (Suleiman, 2023). Urban poverty in this context is exacerbated by rapid urbanization, which often leads to unequal distribution of resources and social services. This study critically examines the phenomenon of street begging as both a symptom and a cause of urban poverty. It explores how socio-economic marginalization, lack of education, and limited social safety nets force individuals to resort to begging (Olatoye, 2024). The research also considers the societal perceptions of beggars, which often stigmatize and marginalize them further. By employing a mixed-method approach that combines quantitative data with qualitative interviews, the study seeks to understand the multifaceted dimensions of street begging and its impact on urban poverty. This comprehensive analysis is intended to inform more effective social and economic policies aimed at poverty reduction and social inclusion (Adebayo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Ilorin South faces a critical challenge with pervasive street begging, which reflects and reinforces urban poverty. Economic hardships, unemployment, and inadequate social support systems have led to a rise in begging, further marginalizing vulnerable populations (Suleiman, 2023). The lack of effective poverty alleviation programs exacerbates the issue, necessitating a detailed investigation into its causes and potential solutions (Olatoye, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To examine the socio-economic factors leading to street begging.
  • To assess the relationship between street begging and urban poverty.
  • To propose effective policies for poverty alleviation and social inclusion.

Research Questions:

  • What socio-economic factors contribute to the prevalence of street begging in Ilorin South?
  • How does street begging impact the overall urban poverty dynamics?
  • What policy interventions can reduce urban poverty and curb street begging?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: High levels of urban poverty significantly increase the incidence of street begging.
  • H₂: Inadequate social safety nets contribute to the prevalence of begging.
  • H₃: Targeted poverty alleviation programs can significantly reduce street begging.

Significance of the Study:
This study offers valuable insights into the interplay between street begging and urban poverty, providing policymakers with evidence-based strategies to address economic disparities and improve social welfare (Adebayo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the phenomenon of street begging and its relation to urban poverty in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, focusing exclusively on socio-economic aspects in this urban context.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Street Begging: The practice of soliciting money or goods in public spaces by individuals in economic distress.
  • Urban Poverty: The condition of widespread economic hardship and limited access to essential services in urban areas.
  • Social Safety Nets: Programs designed to provide economic assistance to vulnerable populations.
