Background of the Study:
Street begging is a visible manifestation of urban poverty, particularly in Ilorin South, where economic disparities and limited employment opportunities drive vulnerable populations into public spaces in search of survival (Suleiman, 2023). Urban poverty in this context is exacerbated by rapid urbanization, which often leads to unequal distribution of resources and social services. This study critically examines the phenomenon of street begging as both a symptom and a cause of urban poverty. It explores how socio-economic marginalization, lack of education, and limited social safety nets force individuals to resort to begging (Olatoye, 2024). The research also considers the societal perceptions of beggars, which often stigmatize and marginalize them further. By employing a mixed-method approach that combines quantitative data with qualitative interviews, the study seeks to understand the multifaceted dimensions of street begging and its impact on urban poverty. This comprehensive analysis is intended to inform more effective social and economic policies aimed at poverty reduction and social inclusion (Adebayo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Ilorin South faces a critical challenge with pervasive street begging, which reflects and reinforces urban poverty. Economic hardships, unemployment, and inadequate social support systems have led to a rise in begging, further marginalizing vulnerable populations (Suleiman, 2023). The lack of effective poverty alleviation programs exacerbates the issue, necessitating a detailed investigation into its causes and potential solutions (Olatoye, 2024).
